BIERTAN
In the charming Transylvanian wine country, in the middle of Romania, lies the small village of Biertan, the former Birthälm, one of the oldest German settlements in Transylvania. The village is still influenced by its old world charm. Dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries the fortified church is an atmospheric gem of a bygone age.
The Tartars and Turks repeatedly invaded Transylvania and so it was necessary for the village to have a fortified church that could fend off would be attackers.
In the middle of the 16th century the Transylvanian Saxons had turned their backs on Catholicism and joined the Reformation movement headed by Martin Luther. Biertan became the seat of the protestant church.
3 rings of walls with defence towers and bastions surround the castle hill. Despite this protection, the castle was stormed and plundered by Kurucs in 1704. The village communities built their "Fortress of God" themselves. When the enemy stormed in from outside, village life could continue inside the walls.
When you visit the fortified church today and enjoy the magnificent view of the peaceful village below, it is all too easy to forget the dangers of former times.
Biertan is a historical and cultural treasure that has been preserved to this today.

BIERTAN
Biertan a devenit sediul bisericii protestante.
